Oh, Karina….what have you done to me?

After the infamous ‘bow-chicka-wow-wow” moment in Lying Season I didn’t think my heart could hurt any worse than it already did….

…but I was SOOO wrong.

With ‘And With Madness Comes The Light’ we are getting Dex’s side of the story. And it is pure agony.

“All I could see was this darkness, this black oblivion that sucked me dry until I was nothing but a husk of my former self. There was no light in all this madness. My tattoo was a lie.”

I know for many of us we were wondering what the hell Dex was thinking after he took a wrecking ball to Perry’s heart. Did I want Dex to suffer for that unspeakable action?
But our once passionate, strong, funny (well he’s still funny) Dex was drowning in his own sorrow. I know I wanted him to grovel and suffer after he hurt our poor Perry, but I didn’t realize how heartbreaking it could be.

“I fucked up. More than I have ever fucked up before. I had the love of my life in my hands for one beautiful, exquisite moment before I ripped her apart and my heart bore the paper cuts.”

His heartbreak and loneliness are what fuels his transformation from his drunk, unkempt, addicted-to-doritos self into the buff, sexy, suave charmer we all know Dex is. With the help of his friends Rebecca and Dean, Dex starts to change and mature all while biding his time for his love, Perry.

“Shit. Dean and I had gone from workout buddies to acting like a bunch of overanalysing pussies. Next thing you knew, we’d start having our periods at the same time.”

There is a notable appearance by his ex-girlfriend (THANK GOD!) the devil-in-disguise known as Jenn, who is moving out with her new bang-buddy Bradley.

And thankful while Dex is cloaked in darkness, well he still manages to put a smile on my face.

“Jenn,” Bradley yelled from the living room, “maybe we should come back after we call the hazmat team.” “Great idea,” I yelled back. “They can spray you both down for your crotch rot while they’re at it.”

There are a couple close calls during Dex’s romantic recovery. One notable example in the form a skank Dex encounters at a bar.

“Nailing someone in the bathroom of a grungy metal bar was a probably one of the grossest, dirtiest things you could do. But I felt like bathing in dirt after being so clean for the last month”

HELL NO! We like you clean Dex, well at least clean of STD’S. but Dex isn’t the same man anymore. And finally Dex has the opportunity to prove what kind of man he has become. After a frantic call from Perry’s sister Ada, Dex is on a mission to save Perry from the evil that is surrounding her.

“I didn’t want to be that guy anymore, the one that hurt her. I wanted to be me. Perhaps the same me she had seen underneath all this time.”

While Dex hatches a plan with Bird (from Red Fox) to exorcize the evil from Perry, he also didn’t plan on his other obstacle standing in his way—Max. Yes that redheaded twattwaffle, douchecanoe has been taking liberties from a possessed Perry, and when this discretion come to light, well Dex sees red.

“Wildcat in the sack. He liked it rough.

Perry had scratched him during sex.

Perry had slept with Maximus.

He stuck his dick in her.

I was going to be sick.

I was going to cry.

Oh, wait. No, I was going to BEAT THE LIVING SHIT OUT OF HIM!”

Dex and Maximus finally come to blows. Dex was a crazed, violent, beast of a man….and I was totally turned on…..

After some family interference, Ada logic, and a quick getaway, Dex finally has Perry with him. After a stressful night driving, Dex, Ada and Perry make there way to Lapwai. After some exorcism preparation, Dex finally learns the truth of what really happened to Perry in his absence.

“She’d lost it. What was ours. What was love. What was life. There was pain and then there was agony. Hello, agony. I’d been waiting for you. Finish me off. Please.”

If that moment does not leave you in miserable gut-wrenching sobs as it did me, well you must be the tin-man. So after some cray-cray exorcism business, Dex goes all romantic-self-sacrificing-amazeballs man we know who he is and he pulls Perry from the darkness for good.

“It all fades away when I’m with you. Everything fades until it’s just you and it’s just me. I’m Dex and you’re Perry and I love you. I won’t stop loving you, even when you won’t love me. I love you more than I can ever really tell you. I love you until the end.”

‘And With Madness Comes The Light’ is heartbreaking-ly beautiful. To finally get into Dex’s head and heart is the greatest experience as a fan of the series. He is by no means perfect, but he is real and honest and passionate. What more could you want? If you want to spend a good hour or two crying, swooning, laughing and falling in love with Dex all over again, ‘And With Madness Comes The Light’ is a novella you HAVE to read. And to quote Dex just one more time:

“A world without Perry Palomino is just too fucking boring. I wouldn’t wish it upon anyone.”

The daughter of a Norwegian Viking and a Finnish Moomin, Karina Halle grew up in Vancouver, Canada with trolls and eternal darkness on the brain. This soon turned into a love of all things that go bump in the night and a rather sadistic appreciation for freaking people out. Like many of the flawed characters she writes, Karina never knew where to find herself and has dabbled in acting, make-up artistry, film production, screenwriting, photography, travel writing and music journalism. She eventually found herself in the pages of the very novels she wrote (if only she had looked there to begin with).
Karina holds a screenwriting degree from Vancouver Film School and a Bachelor of Journalism from TRU. Her travel writing, music reviews/interviews and photography have appeared in publications such as Consequence of Sound, Mxdwn and GoNomad Travel Guides. She currently lives on an island on the coast of British Columbia where she’s preparing for the zombie apocalypse.

Sins & Needles (The Artist’s Trilogy #1)

Ellie Watt is used to starting over. The daughter of a grifting team, Ellie spent her childhood being used as a pawn in her parents’ latest scam. Now she’s much older, wiser and ready to give her con artist life a rest. But returning to the dry desert town of Palm Valley, California means one more temptation than she bargained for – Camden McQueen. Once known as the high school weirdo, Camden is bigger and badder than the boy he used to be and a talented tattoo artist with his own thriving business. Ellie’s counting on Camden still being in love with her but what she’s not counting on is how easily unrequited love can turn into obsession over time. When Camden discovers Ellie’s plan to con him, he makes her a deal she doesn’t dare refuse, but her freedom comes with a price and it’s one that takes both Ellie and Camden down a dangerous road. -Goodreads

Wow. Freaking. Awesome.

Reading Sins & Needles was like getting a tattoo: exciting, kinda scary, a little painful, but worth it for the end result.

Ellie Watt is many things. A con. A cheat. A liar. Growing up in a family of grifters, Ellie is a product of her environment. When most girls were playing with barbies, Ellie was learning to pick locks. Ellie grew up in the school of hard knocks and has returned home to her uncle’s home in Palm Valley in hopes of becoming legit. But as they say, the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

“Why are you so afraid of me?” I asked him softly. I thought he’d look perplexed at the question but he only looked chagrined. “I’ve always been afraid of you, little Hellie. You’ve got something dark inside you, you always have. I don’t want to be around when it comes out.”

While Ellie is deceptive there is also a vulnerability to her that makes her a likeable person. This book is written with flashbacks of Ellie’s past and we learn a little more about how she became the way she is. As most of us know, high school is a cruel, cruel place. People are mean and unsympathetic to things they don’t understand. Not only does Ellie deal with the regular pressure of being a teenager, but she also has the added horror of her parents lifestyle hanging clouding her reputation, as well as a certain physical issue that was a result of it.

“She would do anything, give everything, just to be equal with everyone else. And if she was lucky, maybe she’d get to rise above them too. Maybe she’d be able to look down on them one day, the way that they looked down on her.”

The flashbacks to Ellie’s past are heartbreaking. I started to see her in a new light. Ellie did not do these horrible things for the thrill of it, she did it out of necessity.

“You’re a bad person, Ellie,” he said without a trace of irony.
“I’m not bad. The world is bad and I’m just trying to survive in it.”

Camden is no stranger to hell. Being the high school pariah, he and Ellie formed a friendship that ended horribly. But now Camden is all grown up. He is sexy, successful and he has a few skeletons in his closet as well. The chemistry between Ellie and Camden is sizzling.

“I know what I know of you,” he whispered into my ear, his breath hot. “And I want to know more.”

While Ellie is trying to outrun her past and plan her future, Camden isn’t the only complication ahead of her. Without getting too into details a few ‘ghosts’ from her past are trying to interfere in her ‘new’ life and let’s say poor girl has not had it easy.

Ellie and Camden are layered and complex. So different but yet so very similar.

“Do you think because you can’t see my own scars, that they don’t exist? That’s the trouble with pain, Ellie. If you’re lucky, you can wear it for all the world to see. Most people have their pain deep inside, in places no one ever goes. Not until it’s too late.”

I LOVED Ellie. So yea she has a seedy past and does some pretty immoral things but I felt for her. I understood why she did what she did. And Camden….ugh so passionate, so intense, so sexy, and yet scary as hell sometimes. There were moments where I loved him, and then moments I feared him.

“He bared his teeth in a smile before leaning into my ear. ‘I own you, Ellie Watt,’ he whispered. The words sounded just like a cell door closing. Behind me.”

Now I won’t get into any more because I don’t want to leak spoilers, but the book was fantastic. The story was complex, sexy and fun as hell to read. And the ending…..let’s just say it took me a little bit to get myself together. And look at that mancandy down there 😉

Now I am slightly biased because I am a huge Karina Halle fan. As many as you know I gush about Perry and Dex (Experiment in Terror series, check it out!) all the time, and I loved ‘Devil’s Metal’ but I have to say this book is so different from both those series, but still so totally awesome. Karina doesn’t not write the standard hero/heroine characters. They are deeply flawed. But there is a perfection to the imperfection. The situations aren’t sugarcoated. You will not get your standard HEA. More than likely you will get a crazy ass cliffhanger that leaves you dying for the next installment (just like this one!).

Oh and another reason why I love Karina’s books, especially this one, is because of the badass playlists I have afterwards. I have a whole soundtrack of Dex and Perry songs, as well as Devil’s Metal, and now with Sins & Needles. I am a HUGE music buff so now every time I hear NIN, Billy Joel, and now Dire Straits (teared up immediately, perfect choice btw) I associate these songs with these incredible characters that inhabit my mind. Music is so emotional and powerful and to pair that with my feelings towards a book/character/scene is just awesome. And if you walk away with anything from reading these books a little musical education cannot hurt.

If your looking for a intense, sexy, intriguing story to get into with REAL people with REAL problems you cannot find a better way to spend the night then curling up with Sins & Needles.

ARC Review (subject to change)

The Devil’s Metal (Devil’s #1)

SONY DSCIt’s the summer of 1974 and 21-year old Dawn Emerson has only three things she wants to do: compete one last time in the Ellensburg Rodeo, win back her ex-boyfriend Ryan, and become the best damn music journalist at Central Washington University. But all her plans are left in the dust when she’s contacted by Creem magazine to go on the road with one of her favorite groups, the up-and-coming metal band, Hybrid.

At first the assignment reads like a dream come true. Not only will Dawn land some much-needed credibility as a female music journalist, but she’ll finally get to experience life from the other side of the stage, and maybe crack the drunken, enigmatic code that is guitarist Sage Knightly. Instead, Dawn finds herself on an aging tour bus filled with ego-maniacs, band politics and a whole lot of sex, drugs and rock n’ roll. When monsters start showing up in dressing rooms and some of Sage’s groupies become increasingly strange and dangerous, Dawn discovers the band is not only going places – they’re going straight to Hell.

And Dawn has a backstage pass.-Goodreads

Yikes! This book was the perfect combination  of ‘Almost Famous’ meeting Satan. This book starts out during the decade of sex, drugs, and rock and roll. And trust me, there is PLENTY of all three in ‘Devil’s Metal’!

What I love most about Karina Halle’s characters is there are so believable. Yes I know a plot involving the master of evil is meant to be far fetched, but the characters, situations and emotions are all too real. Dawn is bad ass. She is an extremely relatable heroine and she is experiencing rock music during it’s prime. This book is more believable because Karina Halle is also a music journalist.  She has told us a story written off the pages of her own life, mixed it with a paranormal/horror twist and gave us another series we are all excited to continue reading.
